Medical Billing Business From Home? Just What The Doctor Ordered…...
Doctors, dentists, therapists and many other medical professionals across the country have a great need for independent medical billers. Federal law requires doctors to submit claims for Medicare reimbursements on behalf of their Medicare patients. Many doctor's offices aren’t furnished with either the computer equipment or the personnel necessary to devote the time to doing medical billing in this manner. It is less expensive for the doctor's office to contract out the medical billing portion rather than hire staff to handle it in-house. The increase in HMOs and PPOs also increased the need for this type of service.
Physicians are not the only ones who need the service. Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, laboratories, insurance agencies, mental-health practitioners, medical equipment stores, ambulance companies and even state and federal government departments hire medical billers. And, because the field is relatively new, the market has not yet been saturated.
As a medical biller you will enter claims data into a computer, electronically transmit claims through a clearinghouse to insurers, prepare paper claims, generate management reports, mail patients' statements, post payments, send notices to patients who haven't paid and suggest ways to improve billing procedures. Some billers also offer consulting services to clients that want to improve their billing systems.
