SOHOJOBS  SCAM OF THE WEEK:

Each week we profile a work at home scam that you should avoid! Subscriber here to access more scam reports!

SCAM: Westwood Virtual Staffing

One of the biggest Virtual Assistant scams around is Westwood Virtual Staffing. They charge you a $24.95 fee and then redirect you to a free website. Being affiliated with Westwood Virtual Staffing will actually hurt your chances of ever being hired since they do not provide you with current job information or application instructions.

Westwood Virtual Staffing has received many complaints. They frequently change their website address and company name. Most job seekers that pay the fee to Westwood Virtual Staffing do not even receive a reply.

PLEASE DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM.

SCAM: Envelope Stuffing

A U.S. court has temporarily shut down an operation that used "spam" e-mail to drum up customers for a fraudulent work-at-home scheme, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said. Gregory Bryant and Nadira Bryant of Florida promised recipients of their unsolicited e-mail that they would earn $4 for each envelope they stuffed and mailed as long as they paid $24.77 for a start-up kit, the FTC said.

Those who paid for the kit instead got a CD-ROM explaining how to get others to pay money for an envelope-stuffing kit, the FTC said in a complaint. They were charged another $24.95 after a 30-day trial period. The two defendants, who operated under a variety of business aliases, did not honor refund requests, the consumer-protection agency said.

The operation has been temporarily shut down by a U.S. court in Florida, and the FTC said it would press to shut it down permanently and return profits to consumers. They operated businesses under the following names: Gregory Bryant & Associates, Dove Marketing Corporation, GBA Publishing, Inc., GBA Financing, Network Marketing, Miracle Moms, and DM Marketing Services. Other envelope stuffing scammers include Financial Resources Unlimited, Supreme Mailing Services, Inc., L. Lewis & Associates and A. Joseph & Associates.

“Stuffing is fine for turkeys and stockings, but envelope-stuffing scams deserve a lump of coal,” said Howard Beales, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Consumers who have been ‘plucked’ by a work-at-home program and now believe it may not be legitimate can file a complaint with the Commission.”

If you are tempted by a great sounding envelope stuffing ad, remember this: ALL ENVELOPE STUFFING OFFERS ARE SCAMS!

SCAM: Coupon Scammers Busted

Coupon Connection of America, Inc., based in Houston, Texas, and its owner, Texas resident Don Farmer, are barred from operating their business opportunity in Iowa, Colorado, West Virginia, Wyoming, South Carolina and many other states under a formal agreement that arose out of allegations that the company violated the Consumer Fraud Act.

Coupon Connection offers a so-called business opportunity based on selling books of grocery coupons to individual consumers and to organizations to re-sell as a fundraiser, but no investor has even been able to make enough money to even cover the initial investment.

People who invested in the business opportunity quickly found that there was very little demand for the coupon books, either on the part of individuals or organizations, however Coupon Connection claims the opportunity leads to riches. In fact, all of the testimonials in Coupon Connections advertisements were fake. The Consumer Protection Division contacted several of the individuals prominently featured in testimonials about their "success stories" with the business opportunity. But the Division found that none of the testimonial-givers contacted was still pursuing the business opportunity.  Two testimonial-givers were on the Coupon Connection company payroll. Another testimonial-giver was the cousin of the owner of Coupon Connection, Don Farmer.  The Consumer Protection Division then invited Coupon Connection to provide the name of someone who'd been successful with the program, but company representatives declined to do so.

SCAM:  American Resource Center (ARC), http://www.americanresourcecenter.org

Located in Texas, this scam charges $19.98 and claims that you will start working from home right away. It's a lie. The truth is, if you pay the fee, you will probably never hear from them again. If you do they will send you to virtualassistantjobs.com (Which is a free website - you do not need to pay a fee to apply for virtualassistantjobs.com jobs).

To make matters worse, ARC provides no contact email on their website. (They provide only a fax number as a means to contact them.) The domain is registered to  jamie@jlmadvertising.com 7227 Pouter Dr, Houston, Texas 77083 but its hard to say if this information is accurate.

If you have been scammed, contact your credit card provider TODAY and tell them you need to reverse the charges. You should also file a complaint with the BBB in Houston Texas, the Texas state's attorneys office and the FTC.
