Home Office Tools
The following is a list of tools, programs and services that you should have if you want to be hired to work from home. While not all are required, obtaining them will increase your chances of being selected for an interview. Surveys show that job seekers that are not familiar with these programs are not hired as quickly. Many offer free trials, free downloads and free information: |

QUESTION:
I am wondering if I could get some resume advice - free advice would be best but I would even be willing to pay for it if I could get some detailed assistance. I've had the same resume for sometime now. I would like to freshen it up and was wondering if you know of a good place to go to get some pointers? I would really appreciate it.
SOHO ANSWERS:
I hear it all the time....
"I'm not having any luck getting hired to work from home!"
Usually, the problem starts with the RESUME
If you are not getting any job offers, are getting few responses when you send out your résumé or if the responses you receive are for jobs beneath your capabilities, then it is likely that your résumé could be improved.
Did you know that some employers offering work at home jobs get over 500 resumes each DAY? Just ask Mary from www.Virtualofficetemps.com who offers virtual assistant positions. "We get so many resumes that we couldn't possibly look at each one of them. So instead we add them all to an electronic database of candidates and then search for specific keywords, phrases, etc. If someone applies for a VA job and never hears from us then their resume failed to match up" Mary told us.
And if you are using a MSWord template or some other commercial resume software program where you have simply filled in the blanks - get rid of it. Hiring employers know these templates and can spot them easily. If you try passing one off on them, they will probably pass off your resume to the trash bin.
For this reason, I think it is a great idea to get a third party resume review.
Since you are so close to your situation, it can be difficult for you to note all your high points and clearly convey all your accomplishments. Having someone subjectively review your resume can give you insight into how others will view your personal marketing materials - would your resume impress them? If not, why? Don't settle for - "it's good", and encourage them to ask questions. The questions of the reader can help you to discover items you inadvertently left off your resume. Take their comments into consideration, and revise your resume accordingly. In addition to adding in missed items, their questions can also point to items on your resume that are confusing to the reader.
So where do you go for a resume consultation?
Well, there are a good many services online that charge a fee of $50 to $150 for a complete review and critique of your resume. If you can find a free service I would suggest that you take advantage of it!
Here is the only service that I know of that is offering a free resume consultation. You will simply upload your resume and then call a toll free number to speak to professional resume expert who will review your resume and offer you tips and guidelines on how to improve it. As far as I know, this is a limited time offer. If you wait until this free offer ends you'll need to pay the fee to have your resume reviewed.
